Great American Songbook Poster

Throughout a long golden era, the American movie musical transformed Hollywood into a Mecca for the biggest singing stars and leading songwriters of the '30s, '40s, and '50s.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK offers a dazzling parade of American popular songs as seen and heard in some of the most beloved films ever made. With stars ranging from Al Jolson to Judy Garland to Frank Sinatra, and sounds from the Gilded Age to New Orleans jazz to Broadway musicals, THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK tells the story of the first 50 years of American popular music.

Whether it was from the vaudeville stage or Tin Pan Alley, on the radio or the record player, it all found its way to the silver screen. This treasure trove of musical clips overflows with the very best of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, and many more artists.

So imagine it’s the cocktail hour in Vegas and the Ratpack have just blown into town and you wanna hear Frank sing ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ or a love ballad like ‘Strangers In the Night’.

You might be holed up in some late night, smoky, jazz joint watching Billie or Ella effortlessly cruise through Gold Bless The Childor Bewitched Bothered & Bewildered’. Chet playing his horn and crooning ‘My Funny Valentine’ just makes you wanna cry.

Then you find yourself cruising down the coast road, watching the hot sun sink slowly into the horizon. Your fingers are tapping out the rhythm of those cool Bossa Beats and infectious swings like ‘Days of Wine and Roses’ or ‘Lets Fall In Love’, on the steering wheel. The sea breeze is fanning the perspiration on the back of your neck. But somehow you know it’s not the hot sun, it’s Peggy Lee singing ‘Fever’ that’s making you sweat. This gal is hot!

You pull into that secluded spot and watch the moon come up over the water. All’s quiet here, except for the sound of the waves as they hit the beach. You crack the champagne, lay back with your honey, the radios playing Julie London and you start to ‘Make Whoopee’…

Lyndsay Hammond will take you on a musical journey and all the imagery it conjures up, with her smoky-tinged jazz vocals and her combo made up of some of the finest jazz musicians in the country.

This is upbeat summertime ultra lounge!

… it’s cool! … it’s torch! … it swings!
